Roadside bombs have killed two American soldiers in Baghdad, the US military said today.

The roadside bomb, called an IED (improvised explosive device) by the military, is one of the leading killers of American soldiers in Iraq. Hidden in everything from cans to dead animals, they are difficult to detect.

The deaths raised to at least 1,213 the number of US soldiers killed since an American-led invasion toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003.
