Road safety advocate dies

A WOMAN whose daughter died four years ago in a car crash has died as a result of injuries she sustained in the same collision.

Betty Cawley (52) of Blanchardstown, north Dublin, became the voice of a Road Safety Authority (RSA) advertising campaign after the death of her daughter Erin in November 2004.

Both women were travelling in a car on the M50 with two other passengers when a car travelling in the opposite direction crossed the grass division between the lanes and crashed into them.

Ms Cawley suffered serious internal injuries and was not able to attend her daughter’s funeral.

The driver of the second car was tried for dangerous driving and received a four-month sentence.

Ms Cawley became an advocate for road safety and took part in a series of advertisements sponsored by the RSA in 2006. They featured family members of people killed in road crashes.

Her health deteriorated recently as a result of injuries she sustained in the crash and she died at the Mater hospital on Saturday.

Funeral Mass for Ms Cawley will be held at St Patrick’s Church, Corduff, today. She will be buried beside her daughter in Mulhuddart cemetery.
