The Irish Civil Rights Association has expressed concern at renewed calls for the restriction and "perhaps effective abolition" of a suspect's right to silence. In a statement it said this was another "quick-fix" solution to crime that had more instant appeal than sound thinking behind it. "As always we seem intent on ignoring the documented experience of our next-door neighbour in our rush to injustice," said the statement.
