Edinburgh - The chairman of Scotland's exam-setting body resigned over a summer marking fiasco which left nearly 17,000 Scottish school-leavers with the wrong results, Education Minister Jack McConnell said.

Mr David Miller, who headed the board of the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA), quit after an independent report severely criticised the SQA for its handling of the crisis.

"The report . . . paints a stark picture of an organisation with significant management weaknesses," Mr McConnell said in a statement. "I have accepted the resignation of David Miller."
