Remains found in Dublin mountains

A postmortem was carried out today on skeletal remains which were found in the Dublin mountains at the weekend.

Gardaí said the human remains were found by hill walkers near the Military Road in Tallaght at about noon yesterday in an area known as Slieve na mBan Óg.

It is believed that the remains, which were scattered over a wide area, were disturbed by an uprooted tree which may have been displaced by recent high winds.

Investigating gardaí sealed off the scene yesterday afternoon and the remains were transferred to the City Morgue in Marino last night.

An early examination of the body determined that the remains had only been there for a

relatively short period of time up to two years and were not those of several women who went missing in the 1990s and are believed to have been buried in the Dublin mountains.

There was no clothes, wallet or any other item that could have identified the victim. A detailed search of the area was carried out today to try and find anything that might help identify the person involved.

The sex of the person has not been identified, though gardaí believe it is probably a male.

The work of forensic anthropologist Dr Laureen Buckley who visited the scene today may

be critical in discovering the identity of the person involved.
