Lima - Traditional new year firework displays were muted in Lima, as relatives mourned the death of at least 270 in a blaze sparked by fireworks on Saturday.

Officials fear the final death toll could exceed 300. Despite the tragedy, fireworks went off around Lima to greet 2002, although in lesser amounts than at Christmas, as relatives of the victims of the blaze gathered in some 30 homes to hold candlelight vigils for their lost ones.
