The National Driving Instructor Register (DIR), which intends to provide a quality control system for driving instructors, was launched yesterday by Minister for the Environment, Mr Howlin. He praised the board of the DIR for its work in setting up the register over the past five years.

The register's UK consultant, Mr Brian Weeks, urged the Minister to introduce legislation as soon as possible so membership would be compulsory.
