A Danish co-pilot of a plane chartered by the International Committee of the Red Cross was killed today over southern Sudan when the aircraft was hit by gunfire of unknown origin, ICRC spokesman Mr Michael Kleiner said.

The co-pilot was killed immediately after being struck in the head by a projectile.

The pilot managed to land the plane at Lokichokio in northen Kenya, a base used by humanitarian organisations operating in southern Sudan.

The plane was not carrying passengers at the time of the attack.
