A recount in Cavan/Monaghan begins this morning to determine which Fine Gael candidate takes the final seat in the four-seater constituency.

It is considered unlikely that Mr Andrew Boylan will make up a 121-vote shortfall against Mr Seymour Crawford who is expected to be returned on the 12th count. Both are outgoing TDs.

The recount in Wicklow will resume on Thursday in Arklow. Outgoing independent TD Ms Mildred Fox was ahead of local Labour councillor Mr Nicky Kelly by a margin of 47 votes at the initial 9th count.

This margin narrowed to less than 10 votes when the 9th count was reached again early yesterday. One of the two will be declared the winner on the next count as they are the only remaining candidates. Either of them will have the option of seeking a recount at that point.
