Moscow - Separatist rebels killed up to four people in an ambush in the Chechen capital, Grozny, and gunmen shot dead a Muslim religious leader outside his home on Saturday, military officials said.

Three interior ministry troops and a local prosecutor died when rebels fired a grenade at their car, detonating ammunition stocked inside, Itar-Tass news agency yesterday quoted the military as saying.

The car was escorting a column of fuel trucks that came under attack near a checkpoint in the Oktyarbrsky district of Grozny, military officials said.
