At least five people died when gunmen opened fire on a bus in Indian Kashmir today as a third round of elections got under way in some of the state's most volatile districts.
Terrified passengers travelling from Delhi to the Himalayan state huddled on the floor of the bus for 20 minutes as suspected Islamic militants - dressed as Indian security forces - opened fire with automatic rifles.
Police said at least five civilians and one gunman died. Over a dozen people were injured.
India has billed the elections, which end on October 8th, as a test of Pakistan's commitment to curbing the flow of separatist militants across the border into the Muslim-majority state. But over 600 people have died in recent poll-related violence.
