Freetown - Nigerian artillery pounded rebel positions east of the Sierra Leone capital, Freetown, yesterday as West African troops pushed further against invading guerrillas.

The Nigerian-led West African force, ECOMOG, which is defending the capital, said its troops were intensifying efforts to dislodge rebel remnants in the eastern outskirts of Freetown.
