Athletics: There were mixed emotions for Irish athletes in action this evening at the European Championships in Gothenburg as Liam Reale advanced in the 1500metres but James Nolan ran out of steam.

Despite finishing eighth in the men's second semi-final Reale booked his place in the final as the fourth fastest loser.

Nolan, who was racing in the first semi-final, failed to advance even though the 29-year-old was in a prominent position for much of the race. However, when it came to the crunch coming down the stretch he was swallowed-up and nowhere near one of the four automatic qualifying positions.

Later in the evening Marie Davenport failed to make grade in the women's 10,000m.
