LONDON - The RAC, which has spent the last 100 years championing the cause of the motorist, yesterday called on the British government to promote alternatives to the car in a bid to ease congestion.
In a radical shift in policy which was welcomed by both car manufacturers and environmentalists, an RAC spokesman called for more investment in public transport and more car-sharing. It also said it was time policy-makers developed more long-term transport strategies aimed at eliminating heavy traffic.
