Botolan - A dangerously swollen crater-lake in the Philippines safely disgorged streams of muddy water yesterday in a massive drainage operation to save a town of 40,000 people.

Twelve hours after water first trickled into an emergency canal dug through to the rim of Mount Pinatubo, the provincial governor, Mr Vicente Magsaysay, ordered 20,000 villagers to return to their homes, calling the operation "a success".
