In her annual Christmas broadcast, she spoke of her grief following the deathsof the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret.

On a brighter note, she recalled the success of the Jubilee marking her50-year reign.

But, in a probable reference to criticism of the monarchy in the wake of theOld Bailey trial of former royal butler Paul Burrell, Queen Elizabeth said: "I knowthat the only way to live my life is to try to do what is right, to take thelong view, to give of my best in all that the day brings, and to put my trust inGod."

Against a montage of film footage showing the Queen's hectic Jubilee year, shesaid: "As I look back over these past 12 months, I know that it has been aboutas full a year as I can remember."

The Queen, who had framed photographs of the Queen Mother and King George VI,as the Duke and Duchess of York, and of a young Princess Margaret alongside her,spoke of her double bereavement.

She said: "Many of you will know only too well from your own experience, thegrief that follows the death of a much loved mother or sister.

"Mine were very much part of my life and always gave me their support andencouragement.

"But my own sadness was tempered by the generous tributes that so many of youpaid and the service they gave to this country and the wider Commonwealth.At such a difficult time this gave me great comfort and inspiration as Ifaced up both to my own personal loss and to the busy Jubilee summer ahead."
