Public meeting to be held on future of Greystones

Iarnród Éireann, Dublin Bus and the IDA are to be invited to attend a public meeting on the future development of Greystones, Co Wicklow.

The town is designated as an area of high density development in the Strategic Planning Guidelines and the 1999 County Development Plan envisages the development of several thousand new homes as well as industrial facilities south of the town.

Now members of Greystones Town Commission have decided to compile a community based plan Visions of Greystones and invite a range of statutory service providers and locals to contribute.

According to commissioner Mr Fiachra Etchingham, one of the organisers, it is hoped to form a community resource group representing residents, commercial interests landowners, and education and public transport providers, among others.

It is hoped a consensus will develop on a 15 to 20-year plan "to support Wicklow County Council in providing positive development proposals for Greystones", according to Mr Etchingham. Mr Etchingham warned however that the proposed plan was not intended to replace the existing town plan or to usurp the process of preparing the next town plan.

"The objective of this initiative is that the council is well informed on the aspirations of the local community and interest groups for the future of Greystones," he maintained.

The public meeting is to be held in Greystones Rugby Club on January 28th, at 8 p.m.
