Public health doctors have voted overwhelmingly in favour of LRC proposals which saw them return to work after a 10-week strike.

The doctors, members of the Irish Medical Organisation (IMO), returned to work on June 20th after settlement proposals from an adjudication board and the Labour Relations Commission were agreed. The 270 doctors have been voting on the proposals over the last fortnight.

The doctors, whose work includes the control and surveillance of infectious diseases, picketed health boards, hospitals and the National Disease Surveillance Centre in a protest over pay and working conditions.

Chairperson of the IMO's Public Health Committee, Dr Catherine Hayes said: "The IMO will be insisting on a full and speedy implementation of the agreement reached with the employer side."

"We hope this dispute will finally establish that in order to recruit and retain the best calibre of public health doctors a new priority must be attached to honouring agreements and treating Public Health Doctors as key health service professionals."

"Agreement has also being reached on the establishment of a joint implementation group to ensure a smooth and rapid implementation of the agreement," Dr Hayes added.
