Gardaí are reviewing the provision of full-time protection at the Haughey family home in north Dublin following the death of former taoiseach Charles Haughey last month.
In the past, Garda protection has continued at the homes of deceased former taoisigh.
In the case of the late Máirín Lynch, wife of Jack Lynch, Garda protection was not withdrawn when the former taoiseach died in 1999. Mrs Lynch died in June 2004.
In recent years an average of five gardaí have been rostered to protect the house of each former taoiseach. Former taoisigh are also given an armed Garda driver and a car.
Gardaí are currently reviewing the protection arrangements at Abbeville, where Mr Haughey's wife, Maureen, still lives.
Three years ago, the then commissioner, Pat Byrne, suggested withdrawing Garda protection from the homes of former taoisigh, including those of Mr Haughey, Albert Reynolds and John Bruton.
Dr Garret FitzGerald chose not to avail of the service after he moved from his former home on Palmerston Road, Dublin, some years ago.
However, both Mr Reynolds and Mr Bruton publicly questioned the wisdom of withdrawing protection.
