Four of the team Tomas Hanlon with Dr Hugh McGann, and Dr G.M. Keaveney with Rory Timlin who will represent Ireland in the open championships of the World Olympiad in Rhodes, Greece, next October, did splendidly at the Schipol international tournaments in Amsterdam.
They started by winning the invitational competition for the Telegraaf Cup in the process beating national teams from 30 countries. They continued by leading the main championship for most of the event, slipping somewhat towards the end, to finish in a commendable 16th position out of a total entry of 120 teams. The tournament is run on the Swiss system, so the Irish, having hit the front early, were at the disadvantage of being up against the top squads nearly all the time.
The Ballina bridge congress will be held in the Pontoon Bridge Hotel. Pontoon, Co Mayo, from July 12th to 14th. Entries Mrs Josie Cawley (096-70055).
