Prisons made almost €1m from workshops

Nine prisons in the State generated almost €1 million in income last year from workshop activities.

Items produced from workshop production such as printing metal work, woodwork, clothing and crafts were put on sale as was produce from the farm in Shelton Abbey and this produced €949,348, according to the Minister for Justice, Mr McDowell in a Dáil reply.

Most money was generated at Mountjoy which had a "manufacturing income" of €348,781 with some €280,901 in sales at Arbour Hiull, while the third highest income was generated at Cork prison with sales of €128,028.
