Prisoners' hopes of release dashed

LONDON - Prisoners' hopes of early release were dashed by a High Court ruling yesterday. A legal challenge to Home Secretary Michael Howard's decision last Friday to order a halt to the freeing of hundreds of multiple offenders was thrown out by two judges. Mr Howard welcomed the ruling and said the suspension of the releases would remain in place while he studied their judgment.
