Premier1 Grand Prix will go ahead as planned in 2003 with "the biggest clubs in football" poised to join the fledgling series, according to operations director Robin Webb today.

The series will feature powerful single-seater cars backed by football clubs and hopes to rival Formula One.

However, initial plans to start the series this summer had to be shelved - after a preliminary calendar had been released - because only four football clubs had signed up and no engine deal had been agreed.

Leeds, Feyenoord, Benfica and Anderlecht have committed to the series but Webb promises even bigger names.

He said: "We have taken some great strides in the development of this series in the past year and momentum will continue to build throughout 2002.

"We have some of the biggest clubs in football lined up to take part in this championship and news of their involvement will raise even the most cynical of eyebrows."
