Power has been restored in the North to 10,000 homes that had their electricity cut off last night during a lightning storm.

The damage was worst in Carrickfergus, Co Antrim, with power supplier NIE saying the electricity system was hit 178 times.

At the height of the storms, two houses in Bangor, Co Down, were hit by lightning, with one property seriously damaged by a strike on its roof. Other homes had electrical sockets blown out, while telephones were also knocked out.
