THOUSANDS of passengers were stranded on tube trains after a system wide power cut last night.

The power went at about 9.45 p.m., leaving trains in tunnels and at stations.

London Transport said later that power was gradually being restored and trains would be coming into stations to allow passengers off.

A spokeswoman said: "Power is in the process of being restored, to take trains that are stuck back to stations. But we are not yet running a full service."

"The problem was probably due to a mechanical failure, and this is being dealt with at the moment."

Escalators and lights seemed to be working normally at some underground stations.
