A post mortem examination was due to be carried out on the body of an 18-month old baby who is thought to have died after falling into the sea off the West Cork coast.

It is understood the girl was playing in the vicinity of her home on Sherkin island when she went missing yesterday morning.

She was taken to Bantry General Hospital where she lost her fight for life last night.

Gardaí are not treating the death as suspicious.
