A Vatican statement said the Pope, who is in Rome's Gemelli hospital, will deliver the actual blessing but would not read his address or recite the prayer with it.

The Vatican statement suggested that the Pope, who was hospitalised for breathing problems on Tuesday, was not yet strong enough to carry out the entire message on his own.
