Vatican City - Pope John Paul, a staunch opponent of capital punishment, yesterday appealed for the world to seize the new millennium as an opportunity to abolish the death penalty.

"The jubilee year [2000] is a privileged occasion to promote respect for life and for the dignity of every person in ever more mature ways," the Pope told pilgrims in St Peter's Square.
