Wexford hurler Storey nominated as Labour councillor

Former All-Ireland winning hurling captain Martin Storey has been nominated to sit on Wexford Country Council for Labour, the party announced today.

The former Wexford hurler and three time all-Star recipient was nominated for co-option onto the council last night by the party’s Enniscorthy branch.

The 48-year-old was chosen to fill the vacancy left following death of Councillor Pat Cody last month.

Minister for Public Expenditure and Labour TD for Wexford Brendan Howlin welcomed the news of Mr Storey's nomination."The decision of somebody of the calibre of Martin Storey to put himself forward for a position like this is very positive news for the Labour party at local and national level," he said.

“Pat Cody’s shoes may well be difficult to fill, but I can’t think of anybody better qualified to do just that than Martin Storey,” he said.

Mr Storey thanked the party for the opportunity. He said it would be a “challenge” to measure up to Cody’s work. “As his friends and as his party colleagues, we owe it to him to honour his memory by continuing his work as a public representative and as a member of the community in Enniscorthy,” he said.

Mr Storey worked alongside Cody as a psychiatric nurse at St Senan’s Hospital in Enniscorthy.

Mr Story played hurling for Wexford for 14 years and was captain when when the team won the All-Ireland in 1996. He won five county championships with his club Oulart-the Ballagh. After he retired from senior hurling he coached the Wexford minor hurling team.
