Social housing will see 450 homes built around Ireland

Social housing to be supplied through public-private partnerships will see about 450 new homes built in eight locations around the country.

Minister for Housing Simon Coveney announced this as the second phase of a plan to supply 1,500 social housing units through public-private partnerships.

The latest phase of between 456-476 homes will have a value of €100 million. The total value of the scheme is €300 million.

The first phase comprising six separate sites in the greater Dublin area was announced last October.

The eight locations announced yesterday are 53 units in Roscommon town; 50 in Clonakility, Co Cork; 50 in Waterford city; 73 in Galway city; 50 to 60 in Shannon East, Co Clare; 50 in Skibbereen in Co Cork; 50 to 60 in Macroom, Co Cork and 80 in Clane, Co Kildare.

The third and final part of the scheme will be announced by the end of the year.

Mr Coveney said PPPs allow government and councils to use the private sector to deliver social housing.

“The investment announced today is part of the wider commitment by the Government to deliver social housing,” he said.
