Public transport to return to full capacity under proposals to be brought to Cabinet

Public transport would return to full capacity as early as next week under proposals being developed by Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan.

Restrictions on the number of people that can use buses and trains were brought in as part of efforts to fight the spread of Covid-19.

At present the Government advice is still to walk or cycle where possible, with public transport operating at 75 per cent capacity.

This would rise to 100 per cent from Wednesday, September 1st under the plans that are being finalised by Mr Ryan’s officials.

Cabinet is meeting next Tuesday to sign off on the revised roadmap for lifting Covid-19 restrictions.

The proposal for public transport to return to full capacity will be brought to this meeting by Mr Ryan, it is understood.

If approved, it would apply to all public transport operators across bus, rail and tram services.
