Independent Mick Wallace (60) is among the most high-profile Opposition TDs to gain re-election. The builder and football club chairman was instrumental in the establishment of an independent inquiry into the cancellation of penalty points – one of the controversies that precipitated the resignation of Garda commissioner Martin Callinan and minister for justice Alan Shatter. He was arrested in relation to breaching a Shannon Airport fence in protest at the US military's use of the facility and his subsequent late-payment of the attached fine. He made a €2.1 million settlement with Revenue in 2012 for under-payment of VAT and was fined €7,000 in December 2011 for failing to pay pension contributions for his construction workers in 2008.
