Labour will explore the possibility of introducing European-style, decades-long rental contracts as part of a push to make housing more affordable when the party holds its think-in in Wicklow today and tomorrow.
Aside from discussing 20- and 30-year leases, options to develop affordable rental and affordable purchase schemes will be discussed by TDs and Senators in Glen of the Downs.
"There is a well-established system of long-term rental in other countries," a party source said. "The rental market in Ireland has been geared towards short-term rental. Renting has traditionally been seen as a stepping stone to house purchasing."
Other themes include childcare, healthcare and changes to the tax system, including reform of the USC. Election planning and logistics, and the vote transfer pact with Fine Gael will also be discussed.
The party will also focus on what it calls “modernising” issues, such as its desire to repeal the eighth amendment providing for the equal right to life of the mother and the unborn.
