Kildare County Council: Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael dominate

Successes for Social Democrats, Greens and Labour in 40-seat constituency

After a long wait at Punchestown, Fianna Fáil’s Michael Coleman became the first candidate to be elected to Kildare County Council following a recount in Celbridge.

Cllr Coleman topped the poll with a total of 1,493 votes, surging past a quota of 1,335. He has just completed his first term on Kildare County Council, having been co-opted in March 2016 to replace Frank O’Rourke – who was elected to Dáil Éireann – for the then Celbridge-Leixlip Municipal District.

Independent candidate Íde Cussen, the Green Party’s Vanessa Liston and Labour’s Ciara Galvinwere took the other three seats in the electoral area. Independent candidate Brendan Young was unlucky to miss out.

Mark Wall topped the poll in Athy earning almost 1,000 more votes than the quota. His party colleague Aoife Breslin will join him on Kildare County Council, while two Fianna Fáil candidates were also elected.
