Kenny believes Finian McGrath should pay water charges

Taoiseach Enda Kenny believes Minister of State with special responsibilty for disability issues Finian McGrath should pay his water charges, a Government spokesman has said.

The spokesman said while the Cabinet handbook made no specific reference to the issue, refusing to pay was not in keeping with what was expected of a Minister.

Mr Kenny’s view has put further pressure on Mr McGrath, who said he was getting advice from the Attorney General and would be consulting with his Independent Alliance colleagues.

A number of his Cabinet colleagues have said all citizens should pay water rates. Minister for Housing Simon Coveney said those who had paid the charges should not be disadvantaged and people would not be allowed get away with not paying.

Speaking on the RTÉ Radio One programme Today with Seán O'Rourke, he said Ministers should lead by example and pay their taxes including water charges.

“If you are in Cabinet you need to lead by example,’’ said Mr Coveney. “If you are a lawmaker you need to be a lawkeeper and people should pay their water charges and Government Ministers should lead by example on that.’’

Minister for Health Simon Harris, on his way into Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, said it was appropriate everybody abide by the law of the land. Minister for Expenditure and Reform Paschal Donohoe said the principle of paying water charges was clear.
