Former Green TD Gogarty elected South Dublin council mayor

Former Green Party TD Paul Gogarty has been elected mayor of South Dublin County Council.

Mr Gogarty has declared his intentions to oversee a green and community agenda for the coming year.

He was elected to the Dáil in 2002 representing Dublin Mid-West, later entering government in 2007 in the Fianna Fáil-Green Party coalition before losing his seat in 2011.

Mr Gogarty's often colourful and unconventional style has helped shape his political profile. He came to popular attention in 2009 for saying "f*** you" to then Labour TD Emmet Stagg during exchanges in the Dáil.

In 2013, he released a music album and several singles under the name His Sweet Surprise.

He is a former chairman of the Oireachtas committee on Education and Skills and spokesman for the Green Party.

At South Dublin County Council on Friday, Mr Gogarty said his tenure would focus on a “healthy and sustainable” county, with a view toward promoting high standards in home building, public infrastructure and green lifestyles, including the use of electric cars.

“I want to set up listening fora so that people can come with their ideas as to how to make South Dublin an even better county in which to work and live,” he said.
