Fine Gael TDs pressure Fitzgerald on rural crime

Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald has come under pressure from Fine Gael TDs on the issue of rural crime, with calls for CCTV cameras in some towns.

Sources said a number of TDs raised concerns at the weekly parliamentary party meeting.

Tipperary TD Noel Coonan told the meeting that one of his constituents went to bed with a gun. He said communities in Co Tipperary were living in fear and called for CCTV systems be introduced on a trial basis in towns close to motorways.

Sligo-Leitrim TD Tony McLoughlin also said CCTV was needed and gave the example of Manorhamilton in Co Leitrim, where a system was in place. He said he had been approached by business owners who were increasingly concerned about rural crime.

Mayo TD Michelle Mulherin, who also called for CCTV cameras, said repeat offenders had no fear of the prison system and added "time should mean time".

Separately, Sligo-Leitrim TD John Perry, who lost his selection convention at the weekend, said the Taoiseach had promised all sitting TDs would be allowed stand in the general election.

Fine Gael sources have said Mr Perry is unlikely to be added to the ticket.
