Ppliticians have condemned an arson attack on a Catholic school in north Belfast.

Extensive damage was caused to the storeroom and kitchen of the Dominican College in Fortwilliam Park in Monday night's attack, which police said was sectarian.

It was condemned by north Belfast politicians, Mr Nigel Dodds of the DUP, Mr Gerard Brophy of Sinn Féin and Mr Alban Maginness of the SDLP.

The British army bomb disposal squad was called out to defuse a pipe bomb found in an alleyway at Glenbryn Park yesterday afternoon. It also dealt with a number of pipe bombs found in a hedgerow on open ground near Ballysillan Road.

Meanwhile, a 49-year-old man was treated in hospital after a suspected so-called punishment beating at his home in Manor Park, Lisburn, Co Antrim early yesterday morning. Three men assaulted him with baseball bats.
