DISSIDENT REPUBLICANS continue to pose a threat to policing board members and to the head offices of the board in Clarendon Dock close to Belfast city centre, according to the PSNI.
The 19 members of the board heard at its public meeting yesterday that they were under “moderate” threat from dissidents, while the offices of the board were under “substantial” threat.
PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Drew Harris said the dissident republican bomb attack on the policing board headquarters last month involved a 200kg improvised bomb made from home-made explosives, which failed to fully detonate.
DUP board member Ian Paisley jnr said the attack was “reprehensible” and required the “firmest condemnation”. Mr Paisley paid tribute to the independent members for their dedication and willingness to continue with their work despite the threat.
PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggott described the recent police operation at Garrison, Co Fermanagh, to prevent an alleged murder attack on a young Catholic officer as “superb”. The fact that people were now charged and that no one was injured was “testament to the strength and courage” of the officers involved.
He appealed for more information, support and encouragement from the community in tackling the dissidents.
