The chairman of the North's Policing Board has apologised to the three candidates interviewed for the post of chief constable, after details of their interviews were leaked to the press, writes Monika Unsworth.

Prof Desmond Rea said the breach of confidentiality was "unacceptable".

The recruitment panel appointed the London Metropolitan deputy assistant commissioner, Mr Hugh Orde. The decision was criticised by two of the panel's unionist members, Mr Sammy Wilson and Mr Fred Cobain, who claimed all three candidates - Mr Orde, Belfast Assistant Chief Constable Alan McQuillan and Assistant Chief Constable (Crime) Chris Albiston - failed to meet the required standards.
