An Aer Lingus plane at Dublin Airport has been evacuated on the runway over fears of a fire on board.

Sixty-one  passengers and six crew were aboard the aircraft, which was due to fly for Milan at 7.20am. It had been delayed due to bad weather in Italy.

An Aer Lingus spokesman said the pilot ordered the plane to be evacuated when a smoke alarm went off as he was preparing to take off at 7.55am.

All aboard got off the aircraft safely via emergency chutes, although one crew member received a minor injury to her foot, he said.

Investigators and fire crews are at the scene. The origin of the smoke has not been established.

The spokesman said the passengers will be accommodated on another flight later this morning.
