A small passenger plane crashed shortly before midnight as it approached Brest airport in France, killing the pilot and slightly injuring five others.

The regional BritAir plane, which was carrying 24 people, went down on a small road east of the airport, officials said.

It was not clear why the aircraft crashed as it flew from Nantes to Brest. About 30 firefighters put out a fire that broke out at the crash site.

BritAir, based in Morlaix, is partly owned by Air France.
