A MAN in his 50s from the midlands died yesterday evening when his single engine plane crashed near Drumsna, Co Leitrim.

Gardai said last night the crash took place in a field at Cloonteme, close to the river Shannon, at around 6.30 p.m. The pilot had been taking part in an air display which was part of the annual bank holiday festival in nearby Carrick on Shannon, and it is believed he collided with low tension electricity wires.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was taken to the local hospital in Carrick on Shannon and was later moved to Roscommon general hospital.

Gardai said they would not able to release the dead man's name until relatives are informed.

The area of the crash has been sealed off and investigators from the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications will examine the site this morning.
