PSNI officers came under petrol bomb and missile attack in Derry during a security alert near the city centre last night.

Crowds of youths attacked the police between the city centre and the nationalist Bogside while army bomb disposal experts were examining a suspect bomb.

Up to a dozen petrol bombs, stones, bottles and other missiles were hurled at police during the street violence.

The incident centred on a car, and a controlled explosion was carried out on a suspect device on, or close to, the vehicle, said a police spokesman.

Attacks on police intensified as the night progressed.
