The £5-a-week increase in the State pension was welcomed by the Irish Association of Pension Funds, which said it was an effective way of redistributing wealth.

The association's chairman, Mr Paul O'Flaherty, said the Minister for Finance had taken "a bold step" towards the IAPF recommendation that the State pension be increased over five years to 35 per cent of average earnings for a single person.
