The Bill to provide pensions for the two senior judges and the court officer who resigned following the Sheedy early prison release row was passed without a vote.

However, Mr Joe Costello (Lab) said the House was establishing a bad precedent by being seen to reward people who would not explain their actions, in circumstances where the prima-facie examination conducted by the Chief Justice indicated that their behaviour left a great deal to be desired.

Mr Denis O'Donovan (FF) argued that the pension settlements were fair and just given their sterling service to the State over many years.

Mr Hugh O'Flaherty will receive an annual pension of £40,000, Mr Cyril Kelly will get a pension of £30,000 and Mr Michael Quinlan will receive a pension of £15,000.
