A 73-year-old man was stabbed by a youth only yards from his front door in Northern Ireland today, the RUC said.

A 73-year-old man was stabbed by a youth only yards from his front door in Northern Ireland today, the RUC said.

The attack happened in Coleraine, Co Derry, at 7 a.m.

Detectives said a motive had not yet been established. The victim, who had a single wound to his abdomen, was taken to Coleraine Hospital, where a spokeswoman said he was in "stable" condition and due to undergo surgery later.

The assailant struck close to the junction of Railway Road and Circular Road and fled through a nearby alleyway.
