A pedestrian, killed after being struck by a taxi in Drimnagh, Dublin, at the weekend, has become the fourth person to die on the roads since the beginning of the year. Three of those killed were pedestrians.
Kevin McCann (53) of Drimnagh Road was walking near his home on Saturday evening when he was hit by the car. The incident happened at 7pm on Drimnagh Road. Gardaí at Sundrive Road Garda station are investigating the cause of the collision and are appealing for witnesses.
Mr McCann's death follows three other fatal collisions last week. Just hours into the new year, another pedestrian, 18-year-old Paul McGann, Theur, Riverstown, Co Sligo, died after being struck by a car on the Mail Coach Road, Sligo, at around 4am on New Year's Day.
Last Wednesday, two elderly people were killed in two separate crashes in Dublin and Louth. Eighty-year-old Elizabeth Gallagher, Seapark, Malahide, Co Dublin, died after a three-car collision on the Coast Road between Portmarnock and Malahide at 9.45am. Thomas "Gerard" Quigley, Ard Easmuinn, Dundalk, who was in his 70s, was killed outside Ardee, Co Louth at 11am while walking across the Kells Road, about three kilometres from the town.
Meanwhile a two-year-old girl was killed on Friday afternoon in an accident on a farm in Co Waterford. The toddler died after she was struck by a truck in the farmyard of her home at Shanakill in Kilmacthomas at around 4pm. The Health and Safety Authority and gardaí in Tramore are investigating the incident.
