The latest figures showing that 57 per cent of foods sampled contained pesticides, confirmed that food safety needed to be among the Government's priorities, according to Progressive Democrats spokesman on Agriculture, Senator John Dardis.

The Department of Agriculture's insistence that tests showing high pesticide levels do not pose a health risk, is little comfort to people who remain "very sceptical of assurances of officialdom", Mr Dardis said.
