Paris - The dissident Gaullist, Mr Charles Pasqua, gave the race for the French presidency an early start yesterday, throwing his hat into the ring more than two years in advance.
The move by the veteran eurosceptic nationalist was a direct challenge to his former associate President Chirac as it looked certain to split the conservative vote in the poll.
